The Muhlenberg family pair of Philadelphia Chippendale mahogany dining chairs, ca. 1770, each with cabouchon carved crest, above pierced and voluted splats flanked by fluted stiles, above a trapezoidal slip seat resting in a shell carved frame supported by shell carved cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet. Provenance: Berks County Historical Society Benefit Auction, Dr. Peter Muhlenberg.

Condition

Chair #1 - corner blocks replaced, repaired break to left stile at seat frame, knee returns possibly replaced, old repair to left rear leg, seat frames appear original. Chair #2 - repaired break to crest rail at left stile, both stiles have been broken and patched at seat frame, corner blocks replaced, knee returns possibly replaced, excellent proportions.
