Pennsylvania Compass Artist painted dome lid box, ca. 1800-1840, decorated with typical red and white geometric stylized flowers on a blue background, 10 1/4" h., 11 3/4" w., 9 1/2" d. Similar examples were sold at the Pook & Pook, Inc., Shelley sale in 2007, the Machmer sale in 2008, and the Smith sale in 2010. Other examples are included in Wendy Cooper and Lisa Minardi, Paint, Pattern and People. Exhibition: Winterthur Museum, 2011.
Old repaired break to one hinge. Sporadic surface abrasions. Several age cracks to lid.
