Wilhelm Schimmel(1817-1890), Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania, carved and polychrome decorated pine standing eagle with spread wings, retaining an old varnished surface, over original red, yellow, and brown decoration, 14 1/2" h. An outstanding example. Reference and similar examples: Just For Nice by Machmer, pgs. 23, 74, and 75; American Radiance, The Ralph Esmerian Collection, pg. 167 and 455. His carvings are on display at Cumberland County Historical Society, Winterthur, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Condition

Small, 1 1/2", chip repair to one wing tip. Both wings with 3/4" chips. Small loss/a few small chips at connection of one wing to body.
