Two Stephen Girard signed documents, one for 5,000 bank shares for James William McCulloh who was the Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, dated 27th August 1816; the other a note from the Bank of the United States for $522.24 to Capt. Ezra Bowen, dated 1804; Stephen Girard was philanthropist and banker, he personally saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812, and became one of the wealthiest people in America.
