Rare Chester County, Pennsylvania Chippendale walnut tall case clock, ca. 1775, the eight-day brass face works, signed Joel Baily Bradford, 87'' h. While records indicate Baily worked as a surveyor, gunsmith, and astronomer, amongst other professions, his endeavors as a clockmaker were strictly hearsay. It was not until the present clock surfaced in the 1940's that his activities as a clockmaker were confirmed. It remains the only extant example of his work known and is illustrated and discussed in Arthur James, Chester County Clocks and Their Makers, pgs. 37-47. Provenance: Chester County collector.
