The Views of Judge Woodward and Bishop Hopkins on Negro Slavery at the South, illustrated from the Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, by Mrs. Frances Anne Kemble, the cover with an illustrated image of the famous photograph by McPherson and Oliver taken in 1863 of a slave named Peter. Frances Kemble was a British actress who married Pierce Mease Butler, a Frenchman who inherited several plantations on Butler Island just south of Darien, Georgia. He took trips to the plantations but never brought Frances. She eventually insisted on coming with him and the two of them spent the winter of 1838 on one of the plantations where she was struck by the mistreatment of the slaves, keeping a diary of her thoughts, 5 3/4" x 9".
