Johann Conrad Gilbert(Southeastern Pennsylvania, active 1775-1810) - Taufschein hand-drawn watercolor and ink on laid paper for Johannes Kurr, 1789, with elaborate red, yellow, and black banner resembling a crown inscribed "Geburt und Tauffschein" above central red German script by another scrivener, flanked by elaborate folky male angels with blue and red coats, striped sashes, and floral decorated pants flanked by vine and floral decoration, 8 1/4" x 13". Dr. Shelley always referred to the angel figures as "traffic cops" as their hands are poised mid-air as if to stop traffic. For a nearly identical example, see The Pennsylvania German Fraktur of the Free Library of Philadelphia, plate 75. For artist information, see Papers for Birth Dayes by Corinne and Russell Earnest, pages 308-311.
