Extremely rare brass candlestick in the form of a standing Martin Luther, first half of the 17th c., probably Nuremberg, with Martin Luther (1483-1546), Father of the Reformation, holding an oversized socket and scalloped drip pan, standing on a raised circular plinth, inscribed in continuous letters around the base GOTTES WORTT UND LUTTEUR'S (sic) LEHR BLEIBT EWIG STEHN VERGEHET NIMERMEHR 1640 (God's Word And Luther's Teaching Will Stand Eternally And Never Cease 1640), the only known example of this form, excellent patination, 10 1/2" h.
