English silk on linen sampler of American interest dated 1657 and wrought by Elizabeth Rush, b. 1649, 13 1/2" x 7 3/4". Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Susanna who came with their children to the colonies in 1682 and settled in Byberry, a district of Philadelphia. The Rush's were one of our founding families and included Dr. Benjamin Rush, the signator, and his brother Judge Jacob Rush. An early hand written note detailing the provenance accompanies this lot.
