Civil War walnut lap desk of Colonel George Dare, 19th c., with nickel plated shield escutcheon, inscribed Col. G. W. Dare 5th Penn., the lid with incised carved spread wing eagle with opposing cannon in lower corners, 11 1/2" w. Colonel Dare was killed in action the day after the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6th 1864, and is buried in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. Accompanying this lot are copies of research and service information of Colonel Dare.
