Rare and desirable Winchester Van Orden model 70 sniper rifle, .30-06 caliber, having a smooth pistol grip walnut stock with sling swivel studs, solid Winchester barrel and receiver markings, including factory proofs, Lyman globe front sight, Lyman target sights and Lyman telescopic sight blocks, a clip slotted receiver which was standard on all 30-06 M-70 target models, the action is standard mid-1950's Model 70 “Heavy Weight Target”, 24” medium heavy barrel tapped for a receiver sight. One of the very few special orders shipped to Evaluators Ltd, the Quantico, Virginia gun shop owned by Retired USMC Brigadier General George Van Orden, known as the father of Marine Corps snipers. When Van Orden retired from the Marine Corps, he opened a shop, Evaluators Ltd, specializing in equipment for the military and law enforcement. These guns are referred to in Norman Chandler's book, ”Death From Afar”, volume 1 and lists this rifle by serial number as one of Van Orden's sniper rifles and sold to Edward Renzi of Havertown, Pennsylvania in 1953. Overall fine condition, retains approximately 90% of original blue with grey on the high edges and some minor muzzle wear along with some minor scratches, bore shows strong rifling and the rifle functions correctly, stock is revarnished with normal handling marks.
