William & Mary black walnut armchair, ca. 1700, possibly Philadelphia, with an arched cane back and a trapezoidal seat, flanked by scrolled arms and supported by turned and blocked legs with an arched medial stretcher and Spanish feet. A related example in the collection of Winterthur is illustrated in Benno Forman, American Seating Furniture, cat. 57.

Condition

Repaired breaks to crest with batons added for support. Losses to seat back. Repaired break to arched front stretcher with wood battens added. Chips to feet. Provenance: The Estate of Donald and Esther Shelley, Oley, PA.
