Two similar Virginia or North Carolina Chippendale mahogany and walnut dining chairs, ca. 1780, each with a straight crest and pierced splat over a trapezoidal slip seat supported by square molded edge legs joined by stretchers.
Condition
#1 - replaced slip seat, lacking corner block, patches to frame where over-upholstered. #2 - crest rail repaired, new pegs added to seat frame, replaced corner blocks, replaced slip seat. Provenance: Both on loan to the Amstel from 1950-1957 from John Kenneth Danby of Danby Galleries, 808 West Street, Wilmington DE, Upon Mr. Danby's death, his brother Henry Gregg Danby gave the piece to the New Castle Historical Society in December 1957.
