Thomas Jefferson signed letter as Secretary of State under Washington, July 9, 1792, written by an aide to Mr. George Hammond apologizing for not having answered Hammond's request, 9 1/4'' x 7 1/2''. On July 5th Hammond penned a letter to Jefferson saying in part ''some persons, acting under the authority of the State of Vermont have attempted to exercise legal jurisdiction within districts now occupied by the King's troops, and have committed acts of violence on the persons and property of British subjects.'' Jefferson responds that he has written to the Governor of Vermont. Provenance: Estate of Robert S. Knox, New Oxford, Pennsylvania.
