Southern painted hard pine hanging corner cupboard, ca. 1800, the decoration possibly by Johannes Spitler, Shenandoah (New Page) County, Virginia. The molded cornice over a single raised panel door initialed LS and decorated with philphlots, pinwheels, tulips and hearts, 54 ½" h., 21 ½" w. The present piece showcases a design technique used on virtually all documented works by Spitler. The piece was first primed with a coat of red lead paint on which the ornamental elements were then added. He often used a variety of drafting tools, incising the designs to give the piece a more crisp appearance. While the present cupboard lacks the distinctive Prussian blue for which he is known, it does have the second coats of white and red which he also favored. Several of the design elements were also common to his work including the philphlot and pinwheel. The concentric half circles found at the center of the piece were used on the bonnet of a tall case clock decorated and signed by Spitler in the collection of The American Folk Art Museum. The unusual bird with crooked legs was also used on a dower chest and tall case clock in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg. Provenance: Decended in the family of pioneer collector George Horace Lorimer.
