Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania classical mahogany veneer pier table, ca. 1835, stamped "Wm Alexander", the rectangular marble top overhanging an ogee molded frame with gilt foliate decoration above a rectangular mirrored back, flanked by colums with gadrooned sides, the front with ebonized columns over a scalloped base with similar gilt decoration, 37 1/2" h., 41 3/4" w. William Alexander is listed in the Pittsburgh directories from 1837-1844 as a cabinetmaker. While it is unknown whether or not he studied in Philadelphia, his work was clearly influenced by some of the prominent Philadelphia cabinetmakers of that time.
