Set of six Chippendale mahogany dining chairs, ca. 1770, probably New York, with shell carved crest and knees. An identical chair, possibly from the same set, is in the Collection of the New Haven Colony Historical Society and is illustrated in John Kirk, American Chairs. fig. 141. Provenance Wilmington estate.

Condition

1 - repaired break to splat. 2 - minor cracks to knees, one knee joint a little loose, two knee returns probably replacements. 3 - through tenon joints a little loose, one knee joint a little loose, front corner blocks replaced, a couple knee returns possibly replaced. 4 - tight crack through shell on crest, repaired break to rear of stile at crest, side knee returns replaced. 5 - two corner blocks replaced, repaired break to ankle, two knee returns replaced. 6 - one knee return replaced. All with original slip seats that have a sheet of metal attached to the top for support. Old refinish. Seat frames are original and numbered up to VII.
