Set of five New England Federal mahogany shieldback dining chairs, ca. 1800, probably Connecticut, each with writhing paterae and fan inlays, together with a later made to match side chair and two armchairs. An identical chair, probably from the same set, is illustrated in Charles Montgomery American Furniture The Federal Period, fig. 49. Chair #1 - lacking medial stretcher. Chair #2 - repaired break to crest, one side vertical of back replaced. Chair #3 - repaired break to crest. Chair #4 - majority of back replaced. All chairs - rear legs ended out 3" -4". Reproductions - as found condition, washed out finish, losses to upholstery.
