Fine Scottish engraved Charles Playfair ramshead flintlock belt dress pistol, approximately .53 caliber, with bright German silver stock having rococo scroll engraving with panoply of arms and flags on either side of grip, ram horn butt with vent pick, the polygonal muzzle, stamped C. Playfair and Aberdeen, 6 1/4" part round barrel. Charles Playfair was a Scottish gunmaker who is recorded to have had business in Aberdeen and Dundee, Scotland. It is believed that the business in Aberdeen started around 1821. Playfair eventually became Bentley & Playfair around 1845 and then later Hollis, Bentley & Playfair. Charles Playfair died in 1876.
