Samuel Owen(British, 1768-1857), watercolor China Trade scene of a British frigate off the Chinese coast, signed lower left "S. Owen 1795", inscribed verso "by Mr. Owen, Drawer to the India Company, one of the first drawers of shipping in the Kingdom", 11 3/4" x 19 1/2".
Condition
One small 1/4" break through, colored in, about 2" above bottom margin and 4" from left margin in the water. Two cracks, not through, over 'junk' boat on right. Four insect pin holes in water below and to the right of 'junk' boat on right. One small crack over aft flag on left margin British ship. Inscription reads: Samuel Owen 1769-1857 "A merchantman, escorted by a Man of War, entering the Yellow River", signed and dated "SI Owen 1795". Inscribed on reverse of watercolor: by Mr. Owen, drawer to the India Company. One of the first drawers (sic-artists) of shipping in the kingdom, George III 1795." The first British Embassy to China (Lord McCartney's) arrived in China Dec. 1793 to arrange for trading contacts (all copied to a cardboard attached to the back cover of the painting).
