Sam Houston signed document, inscribed Washington, Feb 27 1827, Gen. S. Houston of Tennessee, Gov. Sam Houston, with faint stamp reading Wash City Feb 28. Houston was elected Governor of Tennessee in 1827 and served until April 1829 when he resigned and returned to live with the Cherokee whom he had lived with from age 16-19. In 1836, he became the first elected President of Texas. In 1837 Texas moved to a new capital, Houston, named after their first president.
