Rhode Island Hepplewhite mahogany sideboard, ca. 1795, attributed to John Townsend, the rectangular top with serpentine front and ends with ovolu corners, above a single long drawer over a slide and a deep drawer on the right and 2 short drawers on the left, all flanked by cupboard doors, supported by square tapering legs with bellflower and clover chain inlays and terminating in banded cuffs, 37 1/4" h., 66 3/4" w. A nearly identical example with the same attribution is illustrated in American Furniture The Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery, fig. 359. Affixed to the underside of the slide is an early typewritten label detailing the descent of the sideboard through the family of George Tennant of Rhode Island.
