Pine sailmakers chest, inscribed Sailmaker - WR, dated 1837 on raised panel on lid, the scrimshaw bone side handles engraved with a ship, titled Baltimore and Cape, the escutcheon engraved with a gentleman with a cigarette, the front with an applied carved mermaid, the interior with two fitted sliding trays, together with a sailors wooden"deadeye", 10 1/2" h., 20" w. Provenance: A Maryland collection. Surface abrasions throughout, lacking lock, mermaid is lacking one arm, accompanied by a typed letter of its discovery in a Baltimore attic in the 1960's.
