Rare Philadelphia combback Windsor armchair, ca. 1760, branded by Thomas Gilpin. Illustrated in Schiffer Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County Pennsylvania, fig. 51, listed as the collection of Mrs. C. Wm. Johnson. One of Philadelphia's earliest and most desirable chair maker, few signed examples of Gilpin are known.
