Philadelphia Chippendale mahogany high chest in two parts, ca. 1770, the broken arch bonnet with urn and flame finials and carved rosettes, above three short drawers, the center with shell and applied foliate carving, above four long drawers flanked by fluted quarter columns, resting on a base with one long and three short drawers supported by cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet, the backboards bear three early handwritten notes discussing the history of the piece, 93 3/4" h., 43" w.
Condition
Original finials, rosettes, and brasses. Lower drawer of upper section originally had a butler's desk interior. It has been converted to a drawer. the facing of this drawer is original. Repaired breaks to corners of cornice. Early notes on backboard appear to be signed Caleb Hand. Fine old surface. Possibly some restoration to applied carving. A nearly identical lowboy, possibly the companion to this lot and also sold by Joe Kindig was sold at Sothebys Sinking Springs Farms January 18, 2003, Lot 1258. A nearly identical carved drawer attributed to Martin Jugiez can be found on a chest on chest illustrated in Bechendite American Furniture 2004, Fig. 38 and was sold at Sotheby's The Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Gammot duPont Copeland, January 19, 2002, Lot 189.
