Philadelphia Chippendale mahogany dining chair, ca. 1770, with a diapered shell and tassel carved crest, over a pierced splat and slip seat with shell carved apron, supported by cabriole legs terminating in ball in claw feet. A related pair of chairs can be found in the Kaufman Collection, No. 8 in American Furniture in the Kaufman Collection. The carving attributed to an unidentified maker dubbed the"spiky leaf carver". Provenance: The Collection of Mr. & Mrs. George P. Bissell, Jr.
