Important Harrisburg, Pennsylvania silk on gauze needlework sampler, dated 1807, wrought by Elizabeth Finney at Mrs. Leah Meguier's School, 20" x 22". The present example stands out as one of the best works from this well documented group and remains in a wonderful state of preservation. The central scene was derived from an early engraving of Spring from James Thomson's Seasons and the added embellishments of the coiled brass and silk border elevate it above other examples from this group. Illustrated in Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, fig. 464 and Schiffer, Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania, plate II.
