Extremely rare Pennsylvania German large cutwork valentine for Johannes Schaffer, who was born in Philadelphia ca. 1788, the sawtooth border centers on a circle with script, flanked by eight radiating rows of hearts, with script interspersed with intricate love birds, tulips, and vine arrangements in red, green, and yellow, each with cutwork names, 13" dia. Germanic fraktur of Philadelphia origin is very uncommon as the city was basically Quaker and English speaking.
