Pair of Philadelphia Queen Anne walnut dining chairs, ca. 1755, possibly the workshop of William Savery, each with an incised cupid's bow crest above a solid vasiform splat and trapezoidal slip seat supported by cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, one chair retains an exceptional original dry surface, the other in a mellow 19th c. finish. Provenance: Thomas Scattergood, 1765-1814; Joseph Scattergood, 1764-1839; Thomas Scattergood, 1802-1883; Sarah Hillman Scattergood, 1833-1919; Anna Scattergood Dutton, 1858-1944; Horace Dutton Webster, 1881-1943; Nancy Webster Gawthrop, 1925-1986; William Hubbell Gawthrop, Jr., 1949-1987 to the present owner.
