Pair of oil on canvas portraits of Bartholomew Penrose Sr. (1674-1711) of Bristol and his wife Hester, early 18th c., the gentleman inscribed in upper right, verso retaining the label of Frost & Reed, Bristol (Fine Art Gallery), the woman inscribed Mrs. Penrose wife of Bartholomew Penrose of Bristol. The sitters moved to Philadelphia where Bartholomew, a master ship carpenter, was commissioned by William Penn to build the ship Diligence in 1706, 30" x 25".

Both with dirt and craquelure. Mrs. Penrose - very minor paint loss, old reline, minor scattered touch-up. Mr. Penrose - old reline, flaking to lower center, several small scattered old repaired tears and punctures, covered with an obscuring layer of varnish.
