New Jersey Chippendale gumwood linen press, ca. 1780, in two parts, the upper section with a cove and dental molded cornice, above two doors with applied arched panels with H hinges, flanked by fluted chamfered corners, opening to an unusual interior fitted with a scalloped upper shelf, four small drawers and eight pigeon holes, the door having an unusual dovetailed locking device, above a base with three long drawers supported by gadrooned molded straight bracket feet, retaining its original pristine red stained surface, 74 1/4" h., 44" w., 17 1/2" d. Attributed to Matthew Egerton, Jr., ca. 1780, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Provenance: Estate Auction in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Condition
Repaired break to rear foot facing. A few repaired cracks to door panels from shrinkage. Original brasses, one with loss to keyhole. A couple small lip losses.
