Monumental Chester County Pennsylvania silk on linen sampler dated 1820, wrought by Sarah H. James under the instruction of E. Passmore of East Goshen Township, the central grapevine cartouche with family record and extract surrounded by a profusely decorated background with floral vines and birds above a vibrant green lawn with rabbits and sheep, all within a ribbon border, 23 1/2" x 27 1/2". Samples from the group are known, including two illustrated in Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, figures 442 and 443. Period frame (losses). Small holes along side edges. Sporadic small stains. Overall good condition.
