Montgomery County, Pennsylvania sgraffito redware dish by Samuel Troxel, dated 1828, with central spread winged eagle beneath a banner, inscribed "Liberty" and above a potted tulip vine, inscribed verso "Samuel Troxel Potter 1825", 11 1/2" dia. For a similar example, see Garvan's The Pennsylvania German Collection, fig. 143. Provenance: Descended in the family of Arthur Sussel.
Inscription translation “Whoever wants to borrow, he should come tomorrow. Today is the day on which I will not loan”. Losses to border. Knife marks. Minor glaze flakes.
