Methuen, Massachusetts silk on linen needlework sampler, inscribed "Deborah Day her sampler made in the year 1777", with bands of alphabets, above verse and lower panel with a figure of a young woman and her red coated suitor in front of a house and blue sky overhead, 16 1/2" x 10". Listed in American Samplers by Bolton & Coe, pg. 41. Page 72 contains a listing of another sampler done by her mother Deborah Robins Day, lot 66 in this sale. Provenance: Stephen Score; Nina Fletcher Little Sale, Sothebys, October 1994, Lot 939. Extensive losses to 3 lines of lettering in center. Some overall browning to background. Repaired small tear in one corner approx. 1/2" long.
