Rare Massachusetts Pilgrim Century joined oak chest, ca. 1665-1690, probably Newbury, with a lift lid above a case with three sunken panels framed by applied half columns above a single drawer, all resting on tall feet, the sides retaining an old swirl decorated surface. This chest is in a rare state of preservation with an impeccable provenance, 28" h., 42 1/2" w. Illustrated: Wallace Nutting, Furniture Treasury, Vol I, fig. 43 and Furniture of the Pilgrim Century, no. 60. Exhibited: Boston Museum of Fine Arts, 1971-72. Provenance: Luke Vincent Lockwood (1882-1951); Dwight Blaney (1865-1944); Israel Sack (1944) to William Coburn; New York collection (1981).
