Lehigh County, Pennsylvania painted dower chest, late 18th c., the cartouche inscribed "Hanna Eister 1790 Gebert Diese Kist.", above 2 stylized green sponge decorated hearts centering on an orange and black pinwheel and tulip tree flanked by similar stars and tulips and heart corners on an ochre and red stippled ground, the ends with bold red and ivory stars, above 3 green sponge decorated drawers retaining original hardware supported by spurred straight bracket feet, retains original decorative wrought iron strap hinges, 27" h., 46 1/4" w. Condition

Description should read: inscribed 1780, not 1790. Lacking lock. Original brasses. One rear foot facing replaced. Feet have been removed from case, repaired, and reattached.
