Lancaster, Pennsylvania silk on linen sampler, ca. 1845, wrought by Fanny Stauffer at the school of Mrs. Catharine Welshans Buchanan, the upper script inscribed with her parents David and Anna Stauffer, over a house within a silk ribbon border, 18" x 17 3/4". This sampler belongs to the well regarded group coming out of this school. Two samplers from this group were worked by Mary Ann Stauffer, possibly a relative of Fanny. Several from this school are illustrated and discussed in Betty Ring Girlhood Embroidery, Vol. II, pgs. 410-429. Provenance: Descended in the family; Purchased at the sale of Fannie Meyre, Willow Street, Pennsylvania.
