Lancaster County, Pennsylvania painted dower chest dated 1795 by the Embroidery artist, the lid with typical sawtooth border panel surrounded by florettes over a case with a large ivory panel decorated with tulip vines, pomegranates, etc., inscribed "Catharina Mauren", supported by bun feet, 22 3/4" h., 50" w. Illustrated in Fabian The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest fig. 223. A similar example was sold at Pook & Pook, Inc. Sept. 2003, lot 290. This chest was advertised by Joe Kindig, Jr. in the Magazine Antiques, June 1944. Provenance: Joe Kindig Jr. & Son Antiques; Walter Himmelreich, lot 370, Pennypacker Auctions, May 1958; Copies of letters referring to this piece accompany lot.

Parts: Wood piece, key and information/letter. Feet are period replacements. Hinges replaced. Losses to moldings.
