John Reber (Lehigh County, Pennsylvania 1857-1938), carved and painted trotting horse and sulky "The Great Grey Ghost", the last work of John Reber, of a grey standard bred gelding named "Greyhound", who was born in 1932 and died in 1960. He was a 1935 winner of the Hambletonian and in 1938 set the record for a trotting mile that stood until 1969. At one time he held fourteen world records and was arguably the most outstanding trotter in the history of the sport, 11 1/2" h., 14 1/2" l. Accompanied by a hardbound book Castleton Farm by Dean Hoffman, 1995 and signed by the author. For a similar example see Pook & Pook: The Americana Collection of Richard and Rosemarie Machmer, October 25, 2008, lot 536.
