John Drissel(Southeastern Pennsylvania , late 18th c.), painted pine slide lid candle box, inscribed on lid "Johannes Stauffer Anno 1797, John Drissel, his hand", above a flower on an ivory ground, the sides with tulips on a red ground, 3 1/4" h., 9" w., 5" d. A similar box made for Anna Stauffer is illustrated in Kauffman Pennsylvania Dutch American Folk Art, pg. 117. A weavers comb painted by Drissel for Elizabeth Stauffer is illustrated in Stoudt Early Pennsylvania Arts and Crafts, pg. 192.

Condition

Small split to lid. Small wear to corners and edges. Small flaking to tulips on side. Small age splits to wood on one side. A couple small scratches.
