Important scrimshaw whale tooth, early 19th c., one side with an inset profile portrait of William Rotch (1734-1828), the other with the Rotch Fleet, born in Nantucket and later a resident of New Bedford, Rotch was an influential force in the whaling industry both here and abroad. He gained some notoriety for his steadfast adherence to his Quaker beliefs of pacifism, 5 3/4" h.

Condition

Good condition. No apparent damages or repairs. Provenance: Cumberland County Historical Society.
