Important East Hampton, Long Island, New York stained gumwood tall case clock, dated 1793, by Nathaniel Dominy IV, the arched hood enclosing a brass works with painted white dial inscribed "N.D. 1793" with arabic numerals, over a straight case with narrow door, retaining its original cotter pin hinges supported by straight bracket feet, 81 1/2" h. For similar examples, see Book of American Clocks by Brooks Palmer, #41 and With Hammer in Hand, the Dominy Craftsmen of East Hampton, NY by Charles Hummel, pg. 272, plate 195. Although this clock lacks part of its original swans neck pediment, the template for its design survives in Nathaniel's tool collection which is now at Winterthur Museum where the Dominy clock shop has been reconstructed. This piece is a rarity in that, according to Charles F. Hummel, only about 90 clocks were produced by the Dominy shops from 1768 to 1828.
