George III mahogany two part linen press, ca. 1780, the upper section with a molded cornice over 2 cupboard doors on a base with 2 short over 1 long drawer supported by straight bracket feet, 73 1/2" h., 46 1/4" w.
Condition
Parts: 2 weights, pendulum, and second hand. Lacking rosettes. Repairs to one broken arch. Four inch loss to door molding. Feet replaced. 5" loss to base molding. We do not guarantee the working condition of clocks. Provenance: Clock to this country from Lowthrop, England (Yorkshire County) around 1819 with Richard and Mary Shepherdson who settled on the banks of the Christiana River at Newport, DE. The Shepardson's had a 400 acre farm on the banks of the Christiana River at Newport. Their small stone house stood near what was in 1957 DuPont Textile Fibers Lab. They built a large house called Indian Hill (near the present day St. James Episcopal Church, which is off the Kirkwood Highway) they deeded all the land to the Episcopal Church, a copy of the deed was given to the Historical Society of Delaware in the 1950's. The clock was given to the New Castle Historical Society in 1956 by the estate of Rachel Morrison, a descendent of the Shepherdson family.
