Francis Daniel Devlan (American, 1835-1870), oil on canvas titled Klappenthal, signed lower left, 12" x 10". An early handwritten note on the reverse reads
Painted by Dan Devlan in response to criticism by Fred Spang one of the "Ranglers" at one of their monthly meetings who said you accused me of being a portrait painter and could not paint landscapes. You are a cattle painter but you cannot do a good landscape. This picture of Klappenthal is the answer by Devlan. Provenance: Purchased in 1923 from Bertha Devlan, the artist's daughter.
