Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun, attributed(French, 1755-1842), fine oil on canvas half-length portrait of a young woman wearing an elaborate hat with ribbon and a blue dress, bears paper label verso inscribed "Le Brun", 25 1/2" x 21". Provenance: Carnegie Museum, 1936.

Condition

Relined. Early/mid 19th c. stretcher with late 19th c. cross braces. Heavy varnish. 2 1/2" touch-up to bottom right corner. 2" touch-up to bottom left corner. Three 1/2" touch-ups to bottom left corner. Small indentation to hat. Recent scholarship provided to Pook & Pook indicates that portrait may not be attributable to LeBrun. Portrait still dates to approx. 1790. Family ownership tracable through a prominent Pittsburg family.
