Edward Hicks, after (American, 1780-1849), oil on poplar panel
Peaceable Kingdom with William Penn making peace with the Indians in the background and a typical scene of a child with wild animals in the foreground, all within a yellow pinstripe border with green blocked corners and four inscriptions
When the Great PENN his famous treaty made with Indian chiefs beneath the Elm-trees shade;
The wolf did with the lambkin dwell in peace, his grim carnivorous nature there did cease;
The leopard with the harmless kid laid down and not one savage beast was seen to frown; and
The lion with the fatling on did move a little child was leading them in love, 11" x 14 1/4". This scene appears to have been executed after Hicks painted an identical
