Early and Important broderie perse quilt, dated 1814, probably Philadelphia or New Jersey, the central square featuring seventeen stars over a spread winged American eagle with shield breast, clutching a banner, inscribed E Pluribus Unum, over the inscription Strong in thy strength we bend no knee, To Monarcks or to Tyranny, But borne upon thine ample opinion, We ride to freedom and dominion, 1814, surrounded by a hexagonal patchwork field, with geometric devices within a solid chintz border, 94" x 91".
