Delaware Valley William and Mary walnut wainscot armchair, ca. 1720, with unusual barley twist arm supports and a medial stretcher. The twist carvings on the present chair are rarely found in colonial furniture, with only a few examples known with firm attributions to the mid Atlantic region. Two are illustrated in Benno Forman American Seating Furniture 1630-1730, fig. 48 and 111. A wainscot chair with a similar brace running from seat to rear legs is illustrated in fig. 25. Provenance: Pioneer collector, Titus Geesey.
