A, 68th, US Colored Infantry, writing to his grandmother concerning his enlistment, mentioning General Pile heading to Memphis on the steamer J.G. Swan, guarding the railroad between Memphis and Charleston, mentioning soldiers being very obedient "(much more so than whites"), soldiers being from "Rebel Masters" and now becoming men, mentions General A. J. Smith pursuit of Forest (Nathan Bedford Forest), also writes of how good the "colored men make good, yes the best of soldiers"...; together with various other Sherman letters written by James' sister.
