Collection of twenty Civil War soldier letters, most from Leonard H. Secor of the 4th Heavy Artillery, New York, Company A., of note are three letters, to include a letter referencing him being referred to as a Doubleday Wildcat written on T. D. Doubleday letterhead, written from Ft. Marcy Va.; a second letter written by Sayton (?) Smith, referring to Col. Kitching"has had his foot taken off and is doing well", Kitching died from his wounds less than two months later; and a third letter signed by Frederick R. Hall of Company E, 6th NY Heavy Artillery, written at Yorktown, Va."I will enclose a ring mad(e) of the tree called the king of the ??? suley, there was a negrow (sic)that lived in the tree for two weeks and he shot 20 of our pickets and findly (sic) there was a sharp shoter (sic) that watched him for three days and shot him they called him Californey Jow (sic) this was when McClelland was here you minte (sic) of red (sic) of it" This same event story was written about in Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia by Ervin Jordan, page 223.
